Introduction to Poems and Songs by Zhie
When I first discussed the part I was going to be writing with Sonja (Idhrenwen), one of the suggestions she made was the idea that one of the characters would be writing love poems to another. I liked the idea, since it meant I would be able to throw a few poems and perhaps a song into the story. I didn't expect to get as lucky as I did and be able to write for not only my characters, but also a part for Sonja and a part for Emmi.
My favorite of the songs and poems to write was Elladan's love poem, because Sonja was writing the character so well that I could truly hear what he was trying to express. It just felt like Elladan was sitting next to me helping to write the poem - and not my Elladan, not the one from my personal stories. I've only had that sort of thing happen with one other character of someone else's before, so it's a bit of a rare thing. However, of all of the songs, I find myself singing The Silver Tree in the car and the shower and just around and about.
Because each of the songs and poems was a little like a separate piece, even though most of them are fairly inclusive to the story, I've placed them here in individual files. Throughout the story there are a number of spots where the dialogue itself is a poem, the longest of these being in chapter six as follows:
Zhie was balanced on her back on a branch in the birch high above the events down below. In her hands she held a scroll, upon it words of a song that someone had written so very long ago. Notes came into her mind, though she did not know the tune, but the melody seemed to play within her heart. On the ground a sudden noise disrupted all her thoughts and she sat up upon the branch with a start.
This occurs a number of other times in the story, but the passages are mostly hidden for the enjoyment of the reader.
